If you are a person that loves makeup, then you have undoubtedly heard of the various monthly makeup subscriptions services out there.
In my house, we subscribe to 3 every month: Ipsy, Sephora, and Boxycharm.
Now before you say that we are excessive, let me remind you that there are 3 women in my home, one of which is a teenage girl.
These monthly services are ideal for me because they allow me to try new products every month without going to the mall (something I rarely have time to do), are affordable, and generally, provide products that one of us can use.
Each of these services is slightly different, targets a different key audience and each has its pros and cons.
For those of you who have never heard of Boxycharm, it is a monthly beauty subscription service that provides 4-5 full-sized makeup products each month for $21 (plus shipping).
Products are typically from well-known brands such as Tarte, Makeup Geek, Ofra, and others.
Recently, Boxycharm offered a special limited-edition box. This was the first time that Boxycharm had made a special edition box and I was intrigued. At $44.95 plus tax (totaling $48.10), it was more than double what I normally pay.
Was it worth it? Would I do it again?
The box arrived almost a month later, larger than its monthly sister box and bright pink – cute.
It contained 8 items:
• Limited Edition Miracles of the Amazon Eye and Cheek Palette by Tarte, which retails for $38
• Custom Enhancer Drops by ColorFx, in the shade Blossom, which retails for $42 (but I was able to find online for as low as $20)
• Gen Nude Buttercream Lip gloss by Bare Minerals, which retails for $18
• First Light Priming Filter primer by Becca, which retails for $18 (but I was able to find online for as low as $10)
• Big Look Mascara by Pur, which retails for $21 (but I was able to find online for as low as $10)
• E45 Small Tapered Blending Brush by Sigma, which retails for $16 (but I was able to find online for as low as $9)
• Full Spectrum Eye Liner by Makeup Geek, in the shade Plumeria, which retails for $9 (but I was able to find online for as low as $5)
• Advanced Vitamin C Cream by Ofra, which retails for $50 (but I was able to find online for as low as $20)
At the full retail price, the box is worth $137.00.
Using discounted sites and private sellers online the box is still worth $86.
The cost of the box was $48.10
Even though not every item was a complete hit, the box was completely worth it.
We received the box at a value of 45% –65% discounted rate (depending on available vendors) and it gave us the opportunity to try some new products and shades that we may have otherwise overlooked.
Ultimately, my daughter loved the lip gloss and mascara – and I found myself using an eyeliner shade that I never considered “wearable” before (and I love it).
Would I do it again?
Absolutely!
